VOLUME 1 OF THE BOSTON TRILOGY
One of the reasons Pressed Wafer exists is to publish the work of Ed Barrett. In American poetry Barrett is sui generis. This son of Brooklyn has written the poem, and probably the book of the Boston of Kevin White, Billy Bulger, Fanny Howe, Nomar Garciaparra, John Wieners, Cardinal Bernard Law, Deborah Hussey, Bucky Barrett, Dice K, and Thomas Finneran, all watched over by Whitey Bulger. The trilogy unreels, stunning at every turn, heart breaking, Catholic, funny, sad, as if all its words are nerves carrying the charge of contemporary Boston into the highest tensions of poetry.
Cris Mattison designed all three books using for Rub Out the cover of a 1940’s Canadian pulp novel; for Kevin White Barrett’s idea that the title should be embossed and for Bosston a refrigerator magnet bought at Cambridge’s Harvard Bookstore. A one-volume edition of the trilogy is in the works.
