Duggan’s Marital was first published in 1989 by Scripsi magazine located in Duggan’s hometown Melbourne, Australia. August Kleinzahler read the pamphlet and never forgot the poems and so he eventually brought them to Pressed Wafer.
Part of the fun of this book is that Duggan translated many of the proper names into Australian so that for an American this book comes not only from ancient Rome but also far down under.
Why do you call me an old fucker?
Isn’t that a contradiction in terms?
In his Afterword Kleinzahler wrote, “This Martial bit then. It bites still.”
