For over twenty years the poet and collagist Michael Franco has been working on the project A Book of Measure, described by Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno as “a unique work, a verbal collage in the manner of Jess.” (As a young man in San Francisco Franco received lessons in how to cut paper with scissors from Jess, lessons that are foundational to his work). The Marvels of David Leering is from the library of Franco’s A Book of Measure. It is not a novel, poem or work of non-fiction. Leering’s muses, and Franco’s, are Emily Dickinson, L. Frank Baum and Marcel Proust. Overlooking this project are the shades of Robert Duncan, Charles Olson and the great Jess.
If you are in the hunt for a work this that is sui generis, you have found it.
